An album of Chris Nobels' music

Very recently Arie den Hollander published an album of Christiaan J. (Chris) Nobels’s organ compositions.

Chris was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 1938, and immigrated to Canada in 1953. For many years Chris was an organist at Grace Canadian Reformed Church in Brampton, Ontario. Over the years he composed various preludes and chorales for all 150 Genevan Psalm tunes. As well, he created some new arrangements for various canticles, hymns, and other pieces.

Arie created a web presence with links to all of Chris’s arrangements. Please see here:
christiaannobels.com. This page is a treasure trove for accompanists and choir directors. All the music may be freely downloaded as PDFs. Chris wanted freely to share the gifts God gave him, and so does Arie. The only stipulation is that they not be reproduced for re-sale.

Arie’s album is now available on many music-streaming platforms (please see below). Listen to your soul’s comfort, your heart’s content, and your ear’s delight. I am no musician, let alone organist, but I can hear that Arie’s playing of the various pieces is beautiful, disciplined, artistic, and musical.

Chris lived, served, composed, and accompanied to the glory of God alone. Arie’s purpose is to preserve the musical legacy of a dear brother who was a gifted musician and a gift to the church.

Arie writes, “On April 18, 2015 the LORD called Christiaan to his heavenly home where he has joined in making music with the heavenly choirs.”

May the LORD God be enthroned on the praises of Israel (Psalm 22:3).

Twenty of Chris’s preludes, chorales, meditations, and a fantasia, are included in the playlist on the following platforms.

New hymn

Jesus, my Saviour, Thank You for Your Mercy

This tune (Palmetto) was composed by Christiaan Nobels for a hymn I wrote: Praised Be the God of Israel. Arie den Hollander performs it. The five books of the Book of Psalms all close with a doxology. This song is one extended doxology made from the five. Stanzas 1 and 12 are similar but have a significant difference. Stanza 1 calls forth praise from Israel while stanza 12 calls forth praise from all nations. To represent the post-Pentecost singing of the church today, stanza 12 employs the well-known hymnic phrase “Soli Deo Gloria.” The SATB score can be viewed here.

Hymn on the Prodigal Son

This is a new hymn tune (Prodigal) composed by Christiaan Nobels for a hymn I wrote: "The Wastrel Son in Distant Land." This hymn is based on the parable of the Prodigal Son. Arie den Hollander performs it. An SATB score can be seen here:

O Come now Holy Spirit

Veni Sancte Spiritus (“Come Holy Spirit”), is usually attributed to either the thirteenth-century Pope Innocent III or to the Archbishop of Canterbury Stephen Langton, although it has been attributed to others as well. Here is a new English version, lyrics by George van Popta, set to a new tune, Carolina, composed by Christiaan Nobels, and performed by Arie den Hollander. SATB score can be seen here.

God Made the Heavens and the Earth

Fred Mellink performs the tune BEGINNINGS, which the late Christiaan Nobels composed for my song on Genesis 1, "God Made the Heavens and the Earth." It is a masterful performance in which he uses a different registration (actually, seven different organs with the magic of Hauptwerk) for each of the seven stanzas representing creation week.

The SATB score can be seen here.

Two new books of songs

Two books, currently on sale @
$6.00 each
Save 10% on orders of print products CodeLULU10
All the songs are set to familiar tunes in SATB.

These songs are based on the I Am sayings of Christ in the Gospel according to John and the Revelation to John.

Revelation begins with a vision of the Christ declaring who he is ("I AM"). Each of the seven letters to the churches (chs. 2 & 3) picks up on some aspects of this vision.

This is a book of songs I wrote using the text of much of the Heidelberg Catechism. Many Reformed youth are taught this catechism and required to memorize it. As one who taught the catechism for many years to the youth of several congregations I know that some youth find it difficult to memorize text whereas they can memorize songs. Perhaps these songs will be helpful to them.

"Sing the Catechism!" consists of songs based on the Apostles' Creed, the Ten Commandments, and the Lord's Prayer.

But this book is meant not only for instruction; rather, these songs are written for anyone who wants to sing the comforting truths of the catechism. The overall theme of the Heidelberg Catechism is "comfort," and these songs are written with that theme in mind. May all who sing them know deeply the comfort that comes with belonging to Jesus Christ, body and soul, both in life and in death.
