This day in history

Seventy years ago today my parents, the Rev. and Mrs. J.T. van Popta, arrived in Canada. After a ten-day voyage they stepped off of the SS Volendam on to the quay at Quebec city. They arrived in their new country with their two daughters, Joanna and Sarah. A third daughter, Alida, would enter the outside world two months later, after the family had trekked across the country by rail and arrived at their ultimate destination, Edmonton, Alberta.

Photo taken at the family's departure from Mussel, the Netherlands.
